The Lord meets Moses in a burning bush and tells him to go to Egypt to lead his people out of slavery. Moses knows that the people will have questions about who this God is and so Moses asks for his name. Thousands of years later, Jesus would also claim this name as his own, as he himself comes down to rescue his people from spiritual slavery.
Then Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, “The God of your fathers has sent me to you,” and they ask me, “What is his name?” what shall I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’
