After telling his disciples that they needed to have a righteousness greater than the Pharisees, Jesus wanted to be clear about what he meant. His disciples were not meant to live for the praise of men, but for the rewards from their Heavenly Father.
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:3-4
