We are selfish people. It is the bent of our flesh to always do what is in our own best interests regardless of what it might mean for others. We desire to be at the front of the line, have the biggest bowl of ice cream, and push and shove our way through this world to get ahead. However, we have a different call as Christians. Following the example of our savior, the key for our relationships is to put self to death and regard others as more important. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Philippians 2:3-4
